On Wednesday, June 17, 2009 WE ACT for Environmental Justice held a 20th Anniversary Benefit titled "Celebrating Environmental Leadership and Action!” At that event, the organization presented the WE ACT for Environmental Justice Award to individuals who have made significant contributions to improving environmental health and developing sustainable practices and communities. The celebration took place at the Riverside Church in the South Hall, 490 Riverside Drive, New York, NY. It began with cocktails at 6:00 p.m., included a short program and auction, and ended promptly at 10:00 p.m.
The 2009 Honorees:
Theodore M. Shaw, Esq.
The Clifton “Chuck” Sutton Award for Environmental Justice
Former Director-Counsel and President of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., was honored for his work and dedication to representing vulnerable communities victimized by environmental injustice.
Anita Nager
The WE ACT for Environmental Justice Award
Executive Director of the Beldon Fund, was honored for her dedication to helping non-profit organizations build capacity to sustain a healthy planet and improve the lives of health-affected residents.
The Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot Task Force
The WE ACT for Environmental Justice Community Award
For their ongoing commitment to ensuring that the Mother Clara Hale depot in Central Harlem is constructed as the greenest and cleanest bus depot by incorporating sustainable designs and practices and identifying ways to mitigate negative environmental impacts on the community.
