Anhthu Hoang is WE ACT’s Director of Environmental Health/General Counsel. She uses public health and legal research to develop legislative and policy strategies aimed at achieving a safe, healthy and sustainable environment for low-income communities of color, especially those in Northern Manhattan. In addition, she collaborates with WE ACT’s organizing team to host workshops, trainings, and public meetings informing community members about the legal and political factors that influence land use and economic development in their area. Anhthu has spoken at New York City law schools and public health fora promoting environmental justice and sustainable environmental planning; she has also published articles regarding the environmental planning and review process.
Prior to joining WE ACT, Anhthu worked with the environmental justice organizations Communities for a Better Environment and the Center on Race, Poverty, and the Environment advocating for clean air and clean water for low-income communities in the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Joaquin (Central) Valley in California and beyond. Before launching her legal career, Anhthu was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at Berkeley where she studied the biological impacts of agricultural pesticide contamination on wild populations of amphibians. Anhthu holds a Ph.D. in ecology and evolutionary biology and a J.D.
