Cecil Corbin-Mark, a well-known and highly-respected leader in the environmental justice movement, passed away on October 15, 2020 at the age of 51. He served as the Deputy Director and Director of Policy Initiatives at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, a membership-based nonprofit he joined as the volunteer group hired him as its first paid staff member in 1994.
WE ACT has been overwhelmed by the condolences expressed by community members and partners, as well as the many, many donations made in memory of Cecil. To make use of those funds in a way that pays tribute to his legacy and vision, we are establishing the Cecil Corbin-Mark Fellowship for Environmental Justice Leadership.
Our goal for the fellowship is to create a program based at WE ACT that will help recruit and equip a new generation of environmental justice champions. The plan for the fellowship program is currently under development by WE ACT staff with input from a steering committee of environmental justice leaders and other leaders and experts who were friends and colleagues of Cecil’s. We look forward to updating you on our progress, and announcing the launch of the fellowship in the near future.
If you have any questions about our vision for the fellowship, or are interested in learning more about how to support this promising new environmental justice program, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
