Karlton A. Laster is the Director of Federal Programs & National Advocacy at WE ACT for Environmental Justice. He has nearly a decade of professional experience as a skilled advocate and policy analyst with a diversity, equity, and inclusion mindset and has a positive reputation with various community partners, organizations, and individuals locally and statewide. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Karlton graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in English from The Ohio State University and a M.A. in Public Policy & Administration from Northwestern University.
His background is in public policy and government relations, having been a registered lobbyist in Ohio. Previously, he served as the Director of the Equity Initiative for the NewDEAL. In this capacity, Karlton worked to engage NewDEAL Leaders and the broader NewDEAL community and support the integration of comprehensive diversity, equity, and inclusion within all NewDEAL policy solutions, programming, and events. Also, he was the Cleveland Metro Director of the Ohio Environmental Council where he led the local advocacy and policy efforts on matters of water, energy, public land, and democracy — notably the creation of the Cleveland Comprehensive Environmental Policy Platform and his Kitchen Table Talks webseries. Also, he worked as the Assistant Director of Government & Community Relations for Case Western Reserve University and as the Special Assistant for Regional Collaboration for Cuyahoga County.
