Urban Environmental Education Center

As part of our ongoing environmental justice education work, WE ACT for Environmental Justice is developing an Urban Environmental Education Center on West 140th Street in Harlem. The building is currently a four-story brownstone owned by WE ACT. And once renovated, it will serve as a multipurpose educational facility for the community, including indoor and outdoor space for child and youth educational programming and activities as well as offices for staff and space for meetings and events.

The Urban Environmental Education Center will meet the need for high-quality, culturally relevant environmental education programming in Northern Manhattan and beyond. The center will inspire hundreds of young people annually to enter STEM careers, protect their community’s environment, and become the next generation of environmental justice leaders. That is why we are urgently seeking your support to develop this facility.

WE ACT’s award-winning Environmental Health & Justice Leadership Training program has trying to address this need by working with schools and other organizations to offer in-class learning. And under the pandemic, we adapted – thanks to the generous support of TAZO, who have championed climate justice education – and began teaching these classes online. But the digital divide has limited the reach of this program, and the facilities the new Urban Environmental Education Center will offer can transform this educational experience, providing hands-on lab space and other forms of experiential learning.

Beyond the programs and facilities that will be available at the Urban Environmental Education Center, its biggest asset may actually be its location. Most environmental education facilities and experiences are located in rural settings. WE ACT’s Center is centrally located in the heart of Northern Manhattan, surrounded by environmental justice communities. This will enable us to work with schools and students who typically lack the funding for environmental education programs.
