Communities of color have long endured living close to heavy polluters, such as power plants or highways in urban areas, and have historically been exposed to higher rates of carbon, lead, nitrogen oxide, and many more pollutants than white communities. 1.81 million Latinos/as live within a half mile of existing oil and gas facilities and the number is growing every year. 68% of all African Americans live within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant.
